Question: Who are the courses for ?

Answer: Courses are for anyone requiring a Category R certificate for inland waters, or a Category E certificate for 1 nautical mile out to sea.

Question: What are the minimum requirements for Category R & E certificates ?

Answer: The minimum requirements for these certificates are:

Eyesight test Doctors certificate Proof of Identity Over 16 years of age Attendance at an approved course PLUS at least 25 hours sea service on appropriate craft OR at least 50 hours sea service for a Category E

Question: What will attending the course do for me ?

Answer:The course will equip you to undertake the written exam required to qualify for the Category R & E certificate.

Question: Where are the courses usually held ?

Answer : Courses are held in Morningside Sandton on Saturday mornings, and practical assessments are held at either Hartbeespoortdam or the Vaal dam on Sunday mornings. Courses can also be arranged for venues other than Johannesburg should this be required.

Question : How long does the course take ?

Answer : The theory part of the course takes approximately four hours, the written exam takes an hour, and the practical assessment less than an hour.

Question : What are the costs of the course ?

Answer :The cost is R1450 per person for the courses held in Morningside Sandton. Please contact us should you wish to arrange a private course elsewhere and we will provide a quote.

Question : What certification will I have after completing the course / exam ?

Answer :After completing the course and successfully passing the exam, SAMSA will issue you with either a Category R or Category E certificate.

Question : Apart from courses, what other services are available ?

Answer : We offer services to provide the required safety equipment at competitive prices, survey your boat and issue the annual Certificate of Fitness (COF), hands on coaching of practical boat handling techniques, as well as assessing an organisations capacity to deal with boating related emergencies.
